Macramé Kit

Starting the research process inside a store, I was tasked with buying an impulse “dollar item”—something in the range of $1-$5 that just caught my eye and I had to have. I found two macramé kits, each came in a single plastic bag for making one item each—a hanging basket and a carryall—with the cord spools and beads coming in separate smaller plastic bags. Included in the bag was also a cardstock sleeve with basic information of what was included and the logo of a craft company, so half the problem was giving the kit a brand for itself. Researching the history of macramé inspired the name MIQRA, from the Arabic word for it—miqramah. The process of macramé includes holding down a piece, or pieces, of cord and making a series of knots to make functional or decorative items and I wanted the new packaging to include functionality. The decorative aspect translates back to the graphic on the bellyband and booklet which is a depiction of a macramé knot.

Thinking sustainably, I created a wooden box that includes the kit items: a booklet, two spools of cord, and four beads but also serves as storage for the addition of future crafting supplies. The box lid doubles as small clipboard to aid in the process of making the final product by holding the cord pieces secure and can also hold the booklet open. This design not just reduced the plastic but eliminated it altogether.
